Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Concept for Agricultural Development

Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is well known to all as the architect of the Indian Constitution, economist, rural benefactor, agriculturist, and water and electricity expert. His main concepts for agricultural development discuss in this blog.

He believed that agriculture in India should be managed and supported by the government. He felt that farming would become more productive and fair if land was owned by the state and cultivated collectively rather than by many small private landowners. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s main concepts for agricultural development were:

Irrigation

Babasaheb took initiative for irrigation scheme for agriculture. From 1942 to 1946, when they were the Labour Minister in the State Cabinet, They had the portfolios of Labour, Irrigation and Energy. They started dams on the Hirakund, Damodar and Son rivers in India.

Dr. Babasaheb put River Interlinking projects for irrigation purpose.

State Ownership of Land

Dr. BabasahebAmbedkar suggested that the government should own agricultural land and allow people to farm it together through cooperative farming. This would help distribute benefits fairly and reduce exploitation by wealthy landowners.

Collective Farming

He believed that small and scattered farms should be combined into larger units. Larger farms could use machinery more efficiently, reduce costs, and increase production.

Land Reforms

In his 1918 paper “Small Holdings in India and Their Remedies,” Dr. BabasahebAmbedkar explained that the main problem was not the small size of farms, but the lack of resources such as tools, quality seeds, irrigation, and capital. He proposed a scientific approach to make farms economically viable.

Rural Industrialization

Dr. BabasahebAmbedkar recognized that many people in villages depended on farming even when there was not enough agricultural work. He recommended creating agro-based and modern industries in rural areas to provide alternative employment.

Government Support

He believed that the government should provide farmers with essential resources such as loans, irrigation facilities, fertilizers, modern equipment, and other support to make agriculture profitable and sustainable.

On January 1, 1938, they asked the farmers to remain organized, saying, "You have to work hard to alleviate your sadness." Your difficulties will be resolved more quickly if your company is stronger.
